Tsunami Victims to Be Given Artificial Legs

VIVAnews – Yayasan Peduli Tuna Daksa (The Foundation for People with Disabilities) will be giving 1000 artificial legs to bodily paralyzed people in 2010 at no cost. Most of the legs will be provided for the Tsunami victims in Nanggroe Aceh Darusalam.

Yayasan Peduli Tuna Daksa Operational Manager Simran Nandwani said the peg legs have been prepared for the foundations patients since 2009.

“We’re intended to help people with disabilities living a decent life,” Nandwani said at a press conference at Hotel Ritz-Carlton, Pacific Place, Jakarta on Tuesday, December 8.

He also explained that Yayasan Tuna Daksa was established on September 15, 2008. The foundation focuses on helping people in the low class of society who are having disabilities due to accidents, illness or hereditary.

In 2009, the foundation has given away 2900 peg legs. Besides Jakarta, the recipients of the legs were also coming from Sumatra.

Nandwani pointed out that in 2010, the foundation intends to encourage the people of Indonesia to help the disabled by participating in the Walk for Hope event on December 13, 2009 at Gelora Bung Karno, Jakarta. The event will be the peak of the fundraising activities that have been held since November 29.

Walk for Hope allows people to walk together with the disabled who have acquired the peg legs. “We’ve also opened registration for people with disabilities who are interested in our artificial legs and arms,” he said.

The proceeds will go to the disabled through various foundation activities while some of it will be used to produce peg legs.

According to Nandwani, it costs up to Rp 1 million to create an artificial leg. The legs were produced in the foundation’s office located on Jalan Danau Indah Barat I Blok E 3 Number 16, Sunter, North Jakarta. The legs weigh between 1-1.7 kilograms.

The foundation has also produced mechanical and cosmetic. The arms could hold and lift things up to 10 kilograms.

Mechanical arms could also be used to write while cosmetic hands could only be used to shake hands.

Patients wishing to get the peg legs and arms could sign up by calling 021-65309156. Patients will be required to submit their photocopies of Citizen ID cards, Family Cards, photos displaying defected body parts and letters from the regencies declaring the patients are parts of the low-income group of people.
One of Yayasan Tuna Daksa’s patients, Diding Hidayat (29) said he was glad he could get the peg legs for free. Diding was born with no legs.

“I’ve never imagined walking in a normal way,” he said. Diding has been using the artificial legs for two months.
