Clerics: Ban Smoking

VIVAnews - Council of Indonesian Clerics (MUI) will soon enact a policy which will prohibit smokers to smoke in public spaces. The instruction will also be applied to under-aged smokers.

"If [the instruction] stipulates prohibition of smoking, there will be many protesters. But, if the instruction is aimed at smoking ban in public spaces and child smokers, there are no protests," said MUI Head Ma'ruf Amin, today, Nov 24.

However, the policy is still being discussed. MUI will continue to seek data from the public, the government and cigarette factories. "We are hoping that the data will have been collected by January," said Ma'ruf.

As for MUI, smoking is apparently dangerous, especially for people's health. Yet, MUI realized that if it bans smoke entirely, it will cause greater problems.

Previously, Head of National Commission for Children Seto Mulyadi had urged MUI to prohibit cigarette. In addition, the Jakarta government is implementing smoking raid. The raid is aimed at smokers smoking cigarettes in public spaces such as hospitals, shopping malls and schools.
