VIVAnews- Due to the increasing number of internet and mobile banking users in Indonesia, phising cases in the country have also escalated in 2008.
The issue was revealed during the presentation of Symantec's annual security trend study's results at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, MH Thamrin, in Jakarta on Wednesday, May 6.
Phising is a fraud method applied to the internet users by sending forged e-mails which seem to come from reliable sources. The e-mails usually aim to steal the users' identity and re-create it or any such.
According to the results of Symantec's research entitled "Internet Security Threat Report Volume XIV", Indonesia is ranked 8 in the list of countries with the most phising sites in Asia Pacific and Japan.
The rank is higher compared to the previous year when Indonesia only came in number 10. However, the percentage of phising acts in Indonesia has not much increased. The increase is only 2 percent of all sites whose hosting servers are located in Indonesia.
In this matter, Indonesia has topped Malaysia and Singapore but is still under China, South Korea, Taiwan, Japan, Australia, and Thailand.
"Most of the phising cases in Indonesia target the financial sector", System Engineering Manager of Symantec Singapore & Indonesia, Ronnie Ng, said. The percentage of phising cases in the financial sector could reach until 76 percents.
Thus, internet users have to be cautious everytime they receive e-mails from the banks. "You should always check whether the e-mail is genuine, by phone", Ng said.
Symantec's Technical Consultant, Albert Lay, also said to be careful with phising e-mails come from BCA Bank or Mandiri Bank. "Banks never do such thing", Lay said.
