VIVAnews - The ICT (information and communication technology) progress must go hand-in-hand with the infrastructure development. The regulator is indeed a key player to follow up the development plan.
According to data of the Economist Intelligence Unit Survey, Indonesia's position in the 2008 E-Readiness Rankings is still above Iran and Azerbaijan, and below Vietnam, Kazakhstan and Alegeria with mean score of 3.5 (8.95 the highest).
"The low ranking is a result of lack of infrastructure and connectivity (2.3)," said Head of Telematics Society Setyanto P Santosa on Wednesday, Nov 11, in Jakarta.
Setyanto also noted other factors: upsetting legal circumstances (3.2), low adoption of business and consumer (3.2), government's views and policies (3.4), social and cultural background (3.53) and improper business habitat (6.49).
According to Setyanto, other points that are also considered in the rating include broadband penetration, broadband affordability, cell phone penetration, internet penetration, PC penetration, Wi-Fi penetration, internet security and electronic IDs.
"But I'm sure that when the ICT infrastructure is accessible by the majority of the Indonesian people, it may boost Indonesia's ranking," he said.
Indonesia has likely been late in providing broadband access and the above issues are the true challenges in the future. "There must be however chances to keep developing the nation," he said.
Indonesia is home for 170.5 million of telecommunication users of which 30.05 million of them are fixed line telephone users.
As regards mobile device utilization, including cell phones or wireless modems, a figure of 140.5 million users is recorded.
